Fixed grinding center
A fixed grinding center is a requirement for the processing of bar material. This requires separate slides for grinding and regulating wheel and a height adjustment of the workrest blade. The rotating material is conveyed by bar feeding tables.
A fixed grinding center eases the machine setup for any kind of workpiece.

Easy machines
On machines without fixed grinding center, the grinding wheel spindle and grinding wheel motor are directly mounted on the machine bed. As the grinding wheel wears, workrest blade and regulating wheel have to be moved towards the grinding wheel. The regulating wheel spindle is mounted on the upper slide, on top of the lower slide with the workrest blade.
This makes the machines simpler and more compact, but it makes the setup less convenient and is unsuitable for large workpieces.

Regulating wheel
For throughfeed grinding, the regulating wheel is tilted to transport the workpiece in axial direction. A common angle is 3°. For infeed grinding, a smaller angle of appr. 0.5° is sufficient, just to keep the workpiece at the axial stop.
The regulating wheel contour is a hyperboloid, so the resulting contact of the tilted wheel and the workpiece is a straight line.
Grinding wheel
Depending on the requirements, the grinding wheel is contoured cylindrically or divided into rough, fine grinding and exit zone.
